Fiona Oakes in the world’s toughest race
Following her completion of MdS in 2012 and her multi record winning marathons last year, Fiona took time away from her tight schedule at her animal sanctuary to attempt the harsh event again.
As well as dealing with extreme temperatures of 50 C, the MdS is across sand dunes and rough tracks with some climbs up sand dunes and hills as well as long distances. This year included an 82 km section (double marathon), 251 km in total, and an 800ft climb up a sand dune. 50 runners had dropped out by stage 3, mostly by heat stroke, and cut off times had to be extended.
At this early stage it appears Fiona was the first woman home from the main race and among the top men.
